TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding the potential occurrence of high waves in several maritime regions of Indonesia from February 11 to 14, 2024.

BMKG forecaster Rena Trisantikawaty stated that the wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia generally move from the northeast to the east with wind speeds ranging from 5-20 knots, while the southern part of Indonesia generally experiences winds moving from the southwest to the northwest with wind speeds ranging from 3-16 knots.

"The highest wind speeds were recorded in the eastern part of the Java Sea and the northern Pacific Ocean near Maluku," she said in a written statement on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

These conditions are causing an increase in wave heights of 1.25-2.5 meters in the northern Malacca Strait, western Indian Ocean near the Nias Islands, western Indian Ocean near Bengkulu, western Indian Ocean near Aceh, western Indian Ocean near the Mentawai Islands, western Indian Ocean near Lampung, southern Indian Ocean near Banten, southern Indian Ocean near Central Java, and southern Indian Ocean near East Java.

Similar waves are expected to occur in the southern Indian Ocean near West Nusa Tenggara, southern Indian Ocean near West Java, southern Indian Ocean near Yogyakarta, southern Indian Ocean near Bali, southern Indian Ocean near East Nusa Tenggara, North Natuna Sea, eastern part of the Java Sea, Bali Sea, Flores Sea, Seram Sea, eastern Arafura Sea, western Arafura Sea, northern Karimata Strait, southern Makassar Strait, Sumbawa Sea, Banda Sea, Maluku Sea, central Arafura Sea, and northern Arafura Sea.

"Furthermore, there is a potential for even higher waves in the range of 2.5-4.0 meters in the northern Pacific Ocean near Maluku, northern Pacific Ocean near West Papua, northern Pacific Ocean near Southwest Papua, and the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua," she added.

Rena mentioned that the potential high waves in these regions could pose a risk to maritime safety. Therefore, BMKG advises the public, especially fishermen, to be vigilant and avoid wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights over 1.25 meters when using transportation modes such as fishing boats.

As for barges, they should be wary of wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights over 1.5 meters. Ferry boats should avoid wind speeds exceeding 21 knots and wave heights greater than 2.5 meters.

"We urge people living and working in coastal areas prone to high waves to remain vigilant," she said.
