TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An offshore earthquake shakes the Sorong regions as well as Raja Ampat in Southwest Papua on Saturday afternoon, July 26, 2025. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the recorded earthquake was felt at III-IV MMI intensity, and occurred at 02:31 p.m. local time.
BMKG initially reported the earthquake's magnitude as 6.0 before correcting it to 5.8, with the epicenter at 64 kilometers northeast of Sorong City and a 14-kilometer depth.
According to BMKG's director of the earthquake and tsunami center, Daryono, the tremor was tectonic, triggered by the activity of the Sorong Fault. "The Sorong Fault is an active fault with a left-lateral strike-slip mechanism located in West Papua," he said in a written statement shared after the earthquake.
Based on BMKG's report, the earthquake was felt in the Sorong region with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, or felt by many people indoors. In Raja Ampat, the earthquake was felt with an intensity scale of III MMI, akin to a truck passing by while being indoors.
According to BMKG, no reports of damage caused by the quake have been received. No tsunami threats have been recorded as well, based on the agency's modeling.
The earthquakes in Sorong and Raja Ampat are the latest in a series of felt tremors in Indonesia. BMKG previously logged a magnitude 6.0 earthquake this morning, located offshore 104 kilometers southwest of Doi Island, West Halmahera, North Maluku.
The earthquake was felt in West Halmahera, Ternate, and Tidore with a scale of III MMI, as well as Manado Minahasa at a weaker intensity.
Poso Earthquake
Meanwhile, the agency recorded at least 148 aftershocks since Thursday, July 24, in the wake of a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Poso. The largest aftershock was recorded at a magnitude of 5.5, while the weakest was 1.6, and it "continues to drop," said Daryono.
According to the official report from the Central Sulawesi Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the most affected area is Southeast Pamona Sub-district, especially in the villages of Tokilo, Tindoli, and Tolambo. More than a hundred houses have suffered various degrees of damage, including severe and light. Among the affected buildings are a church and a kindergarten.
