TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Commission on Violence Against Women, or Komnas Perempuan, has condemned the attack on the Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Andrie Yunus. The commission described the act as a form of terror, intimidation, and an attempt to silence the critical stance of civil society, which is guaranteed and protected by the constitution and various laws.

Deputy Chair of Komnas Perempuan, Dahlia Madanih, noted that Andrie Yunus has consistently conducted policy and human rights advocacy. "Among these is his work on Law Number 03 of 2025 concerning the Indonesian National Military, which also has an impact on the lives of women," Dahlia said in an official statement on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

She stated that such acts of violence run contrary to Article 28G, paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees the right to personal protection and security. It also violates Article 66 of Law Number 39 of 1999 concerning Human Rights, which asserts the right of every person to fight for human rights without intimidation, threats, or violence.

Furthermore, Indonesia is bound by the principles of the 1998 United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. The declaration guarantees the right of every individual to promote and protect human rights free from threats and violence.

Indonesia was elected as the President of the UN Human Rights Council this year. In this role, it is tasked with leading member states in their compliance with human rights principles. This obligation must be demonstrated by addressing human rights violations occurring within its own borders.

"In this instance, it is a case of physical assault against one of the human rights defenders in Indonesia," said Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Sondang Frishka.

Andrie Yunus was attacked with acid by unidentified individuals on Jalan Talang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, March 12, 2026, at approximately 11:37 p.m. According to the chronology provided by KontraS, Andrie was riding his motorcycle on Salemba I - Talang Street when the incident occurred.

Two perpetrators approached Andrie from the opposite direction on a motorcycle, allegedly a 2016-2021 model Honda Beat. The suspects are described as two men, acting as driver and passenger.

"They have certain characteristics: the first perpetrator was wearing a white-and-blue t-shirt, jeans, and a black helmet," according to observations released by KontraS on Friday, March 13, 2026.

One of the perpetrators poured acid toward Andrie, striking several parts of his body. Andrie immediately screamed in pain and fell from his motorcycle. As a result of the attack, he suffered serious injuries across his body, particularly to his hands, face, chest, and eyes.

Based on an examination of the scene, KontraS found that no items belonging to the victim were missing or stolen during or after the incident. Andrie was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in Jakarta for emergency medical treatment, with a focus on his eyes. Medical assessments confirmed that Andrie suffered burns covering 24 percent of his body.

Nabiila Azzahara contributed to the report.
