TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Champions League football competition has entered a new phase. Eight teams have secured direct qualification to the round of 16 after finishing in the top eight of the league standings after eight matches.
Premier League teams dominate the top eight, with five representatives in the standings. Arsenal tops the table after recording a perfect victory by defeating Kairat 3-2, taking their points to 24, three points ahead of Bayern Munich, who are second in the table. Their only loss came against Arsenal.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are in third and fourth place, with 18 and 17 points, respectively. In their last match, the Reds thrashed Qarabag FK 6-0 in front of their home crowd at Anfield, while Tottenham defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0.
Next, Chelsea became the fourth Premier League club to finish sixth in the Champions League standings. They achieved this result after defeating Napoli 3-2. This result eliminated the Partenopei.
Spanish giants Barcelona are in fifth place with 16 points. They defeated Copenhagen 4-1 at home to secure a place in the round of 16. Below them is Portuguese club Sporting CP with 16 points.
Manchester City became the fifth Premier League team to qualify directly for the round of 16 with 16 points. A 2-0 victory over Galatasaray paved the way for them to finish eighth.
Newcastle United, previously in the top eight, were knocked out after failing to win their last match at home to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Eddie Howe's side drew 1-1 against the defending champions. This result dropped them to 12th place and required them to play in a playoff to secure a place in the round of 16.
No Italian team has qualified directly for the round of 16 in this season's Champions League. Inter Milan is the best-ranked Serie A team, sitting in 10th place. Defending champions PSG are in 11th place.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid, the team with the most Champions League trophies, also failed to secure a direct ticket to the round of 16. They finished ninth and had to go through the play-offs after being defeated 4-2 by Benfica.
