TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Besides living long lives, the Japanese are known for their discipline and intelligence. This is the result of a disciplined lifestyle and daily practices full of mindfulness. Unconsciously, their habits help to improve brain function, reduce stress, and maintain memory through balance, focus, and awareness.

6 Japanese Tricks to Sharpen Memory

As reported by India Today, here are 7 tricks that the Japanese use to sharpen their memory.

1. Kaizen

Kaizen means "change for the better." According to Japanese philosophy, each person should strive to make small, consistent improvements every day rather than sudden, big changes. These small daily improvements, such as learning a new word every day, can help a person become a better version of themselves over time if done consistently.

2. Kakeibo

The Japanese have a tradition of budgeting called kakeibo. This habit also trains the brain for awareness and decision-making. According to this method, writing down one's income and expenses by hand helps develop awareness and self-control, which are linked to the brain's planning center.

3. Shinrin-Yoku

Shinrin-Yoku literally means "forest bathing." As the name suggests, this means meditating and spending time in nature. This practice reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, which can increase focus and memory. It doesn't have to be in a forest; spending time in nature can also mean taking a walk in the park.

4. Shodo

Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy, is a beautiful combination of creativity, awareness, and discipline that trains the mind to remain calm yet sharp. Shodo involves the creative and analytical parts of the brain, thereby enhancing focus and memory.

5. Pomodoro Twist

The Pomodoro technique means eliminating all distractions and interruptions, then focusing on a specific task or project. Work on the chosen task for a full 25-minute period set by a timer. After the timer goes off, take a short 5-minute break to rest and recharge energy.

After completing four pomodoros, take a 20-30 minute break to rest and recharge energy.

6. Radio Taiso

Radio Taiso is a short morning exercise routine with gentle rhythmic movements. This physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, activating both hemispheres through coordination. A 2025 study from Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that light physical activity improves memory and slows cognitive decline by increasing oxygen supply to brain tissue.
