TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake that hit the northeast coast of Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at 09:45:25 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
BMKG's analysis results showed that this earthquake had an updated magnitude of M5.2. The earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 5.80 S and 124.35 E, precisely located in the sea, 99 kilometers southeast of Wakatobi at a depth of 623 kilometers.
"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred is a type of tectonic earthquake due to rock deformation caused by the mechanism of slab pull on the Banda Plate," said Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG.
"The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that the earthquake has an oblique normal shift mechanism," he added.
Based on the estimated shake map, this earthquake caused tremors in the Binongko, Tomia, Togo Binongko, Wakatobi areas, with an intensity scale of III - IV MMI, meaning it was felt by many people in their homes during the daytime.
So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami. As of 10:10 AM WIB, BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity.
The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by unsubstantiated rumors. "To avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake," said Daryono.
