TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The clash between the U-23 national teams of Indonesia and Vietnam is set to take place as the final match of the ASEAN U-23 Championship or the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup. This will be the third time the two teams have faced each other in the history of the tournament.
The achievement in the 2025 edition marks Indonesia's consistent presence in the final across three participations since the first one in 2019. In the 2025 final, Indonesia will host Vietnam at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 8:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
This will be the third time these two teams have met since the 2019 and 2023 editions. Two of them took place in the final. In the first encounter in 2019, Indonesia, then under the guidance of Indra Sjafri, defeated Vietnam in the semifinal with a score of 1-0. Muhammad Luthfi Kamal scored the lone goal for Garuda Muda in the match played in Cambodia.
Following their triumph in Cambodia in 2019, Garuda Muda was unable to replicate their success in 2023. At that time, coached by Shin Tae-yong, Indonesia lost in the final to the team nicknamed Golden Star Warriors with a score of 5-6 in a penalty shootout.
Both teams advanced to the final after defeating their opponents in the semifinals. Indonesia overcame Thailand in a penalty shootout (7-6), and Vietnam lost to the Philippines 2-1 in regular time. A day before the final match, the ASEAN U-23 Championship will feature the third-place playoff between Thailand and the Philippines at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta, on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 8:00 PM WIB.
