TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yemeni Houthi group on Sunday stated that it would continue to launch missile attacks on several airports in Israel, particularly at Ben Gurion Airport, as part of an air blockade against the country.
In a statement broadcast by the al-Masirah news channel, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said they declare a comprehensive air blockade against the enemy, namely Israel, in response to its decision to expand aggression against Gaza, as quoted by Antara.
He said they will enforce this blockade by repeatedly targeting airports, especially Ben Gurion Airport, urging international airlines to cancel all their planned flights to any Israeli airport.
Prior to this, the Houthi group claimed responsibility for a missile attack that hit an entrance road to the main terminal of Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel in the morning, causing minor injuries to four individuals and damaging the runway.
The Israeli military stated that the air defense system attempted to intercept the missile but failed.
In a separate statement, the Israeli military mentioned that preliminary investigations indicate that a technical issue likely caused the failure of the interceptor missile.
Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning to the Houthis, threatening to launch attacks against the group.
He later wrote on the X social media platform that Israel will retaliate against the Houthis in Yemen and their ally, Iran.
Several international airlines, including Air Europa, Swiss International Air Lines, Lufthansa, ITA Airways, and Brussels Airlines, canceled flights to and from Israel after the attack.
The Houthis have intensified the launch of missiles and drones towards Israel in the past few weeks, amidst ongoing US airstrikes on their positions in Yemen.
The Houthi group, which controls most of the northern territories of Yemen, has targeted Israel since November 2023 in what they describe as a solidarity action with the Palestinian people amid the genocide in Gaza.
The group has stated that they will only stop the attacks if Israel ends its military campaign and blockade against Gaza.
