Xi Jinping Refuses Talks with Trump as U.S. Raises China Import Tariffs to 145%

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States Donald Trump has once again made a controversial policy. On Friday, April 11, 2025, Washington stated that the import tariffs on goods from China to the United States have reached 145 percent.

President Donald Trump announced a new levy of 125 percent on goods from China on Wednesday, April 9.

Quoted from Euronews, the White House then clarified that the import tariffs are in addition to the existing 20 percent tariffs.

The 20 percent tariff was previously imposed on imported Chinese goods because Trump accused Beijing of being involved in the production and supply of fentanyl to the U.S.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth, Trump explained that the additional 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods was imposed because he believed China had shown disrespect toward the global market.

The 47th U.S. president expressed confidence that Beijing will soon recognize that the era of “taking advantage” of the U.S. and other nations has come to an end, asserting that China’s business practices are unfair, unsustainable, and no longer acceptable.

As reported by CNN, Trump also claimed that officials from over 75 countries have reached out to the U.S. to discuss and potentially negotiate the tariff policy. He noted that the tariffs could be reversed within 90 days.

Meanwhile, China has taken a firm stance, refusing to hold talks with the U.S. In retaliation, Beijing has imposed a matching 125 percent tariff on American products.

China has been told that Xi Jinping must call Trump to discuss the issue of import tariffs. However, Xi Jinping refused.

"For over 70 years, China’s development has relied on self-reliance and hard work — never on handouts from others, and it is not afraid of any unjust suppression." said Xi, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Two senior White House officials said that the U.S. will not contact China first. Trump has informed his team that China must take the initiative to contact him.

The U.S. has been asking China for the past two months for Xi Jinping to call Trump. However, the request was rejected by Xi Jinping as he does not want to appear weak by approaching the US for negotiations.

Instead of calling Trump, China diverted its goods to the European market.

“A just cause receives support from many,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian in a daily press briefing on Thursday.

“The U.S. cannot win the support of the people and will end in failure.”
