TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from a school shooting in Thailand rose to nine on Saturday after a 12-year-old girl died from critical injuries sustained in the attack at a school outside Bangkok, police said.
The girl had been receiving treatment in hospital after being wounded in the shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi Province on Friday. The attack was allegedly carried out by a 14-year-old student who had earlier killed his grandparents before opening fire at the school and later taking his own life, The Guardian reported.
More than 30 people were wounded in the attack, while 14 remained hospitalized on Saturday evening, including seven in critical condition, according to police.
The shooting took place at about 10 a.m. Friday at the co-educational state school, located northwest of Bangkok and attended by about 3,000 students aged 12 to 18.
The suspected attacker allegedly used a gun belonging to his grandfather. Police said he fired at least 26 bullets and was found with another 34 rounds of ammunition.
The suspect remained inside the school after the shooting was reported, according to Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Arsit Sampantharat. A lockdown was declared and ended about 30 minutes later, with students evacuated from the premises.
Images from the scene showed students fleeing the school wearing only socks, leaving their shoes behind as they rushed to safety.
PBS reported that the 12-year-old girl was in seventh grade and that the school had appealed for blood donations for her and another injured student following the attack.
Fourteen people remained hospitalized on Saturday, with seven in critical condition, according to Thailand's Health Ministry. Most of those injured were between 12 and 14 years old.
Relatives collected the bodies of eight victims from Bangkok's Institute of Forensic Medicine, including five school staff members, the suspected attacker and his two grandparents. The body of the 12-year-old girl had yet to be released.
Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, head of the forensic institute, said most of the victims suffered a single fatal gunshot wound to a vital area, including the chest or head. More detailed forensic findings, including toxicology results, are expected later.
The firearm used in the attack was legally registered to the teenager's grandfather, officials said.
Police are continuing to question witnesses, including the suspect's parents, as investigators work to establish what led to the shooting.
There had been reports that the teenager, who lived with his grandparents, had experienced stress related to school. Some relatives, however, told Thai media they were unaware of any difficulties he may have been facing.
The school has suspended classes from Aug. 10 to 14 and instructed staff to work from home.
Mourners gathered outside the school on Saturday to lay flowers, while some parents returned with their children to collect belongings left behind during the evacuation.
One father told PBS that his son, who had been at the school during the shooting, remained in shock and could not sleep alone.
The attack has renewed concerns over gun violence in Thailand, which has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia.
Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has vowed to introduce new gun laws following the shooting. He said only government officials on duty should be allowed to carry guns, although he did not provide details on whether the government would tighten civilian gun ownership requirements.
The country has experienced several high-profile mass shootings in recent years, including a 2022 attack in northeastern Thailand that killed 37 people, including 22 children.
A 2023 shooting at a major Bangkok shopping mall allegedly involved a 14-year-old boy. In February this year, a 17-year-old reportedly stole a gun from police and opened fire at a public high school in southern Thailand, killing one person and wounding two others.
The latest shooting has added to pressure on Thai authorities to address firearm access and strengthen measures to prevent further attacks in schools and other public places.
