TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from a shooting in the northern German city of Stade has risen to six after one of the victims died in hospital, police said on Monday, June 29, 2026. Five people were pronounced dead at the scene, while a sixth later succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.
As reported by DW, police arrested two people, including the suspected gunman, and confirmed there were no other suspects on the run. Several other people were injured, although authorities have not disclosed the exact number.
According to German news agency DPA, the shooting occurred near a youth welfare center in Stade's city center. The facility provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children.
Police believe the attack was an "extended family tragedy" rather than a politically or ideologically motivated act. A police spokesperson told AFP that investigators found no indication of femicide or political motives, adding that the incident appeared to stem from circumstances connected to the youth welfare center.
Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens also ruled out political or economic motives, describing the shooting as "an extremely cold-blooded act of violence."
Kathrin Schuol, chief constable of the Lüneburg Police Headquarters, said all six victims were employees of the youth center, including four women and two men.
Investigators identified the main suspect as a 45-year-old German national. According to police, the shooting was linked to an ongoing child custody dispute involving the suspect's three-month-old daughter.
The infant and her mother were inside the building when the shooting occurred but were not injured.
Authorities said the suspect was arrested while attempting to flee in a car driven by a woman who was also taken into custody. Investigators believe the driver is either a family member or an acquaintance of the suspect.
A spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office said no arrest warrant had yet been issued, pending further investigation.
City Councillor Carsten Brokelmann said the shooting took place near both a daycare center and a primary school.
"We are relieved that our staff and the children at the day care center and primary school are safe, and I would like to thank the police officers for their efforts in this chaotic situation," Brokelmann said in a statement. "At the same time, our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of this terrible act and their families."
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also expressed condolences, calling the incident "shocking to the core."
"Many people, who wanted to help and protect others, lost their lives or were injured," Merz wrote on X.
Police initially launched a major operation around Dankersstrasse and urged residents to avoid the area while emergency services responded. Authorities later confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Officials also warned the public against spreading unverified information circulating on social media and messaging platforms.
"The accounts currently circulating do not correspond to the facts as confirmed by the police," authorities said in a statement, urging people not to share rumors or unverified reports that could create confusion or hinder the investigation.
Stade, a city of about 50,000 residents located west of Hamburg, has rarely experienced mass shootings. Germany maintains some of Europe's strictest gun laws, making such incidents relatively uncommon.
