TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fighting has once again broken out at the Thailand-Cambodia border on Thursday, December 11, with gunfire heard around the ancient temple complex. As reported by CNA, a total of 15 people were killed, consisting of Thai soldiers and Cambodian civilians.
The two countries have long disputed the colonial border spanning 800 kilometers, which includes several historical temple sites. Over half a million people from both countries have fled from areas hit by air strikes, tanks, and drones. The conflict has escalated to five provinces in Thailand and five provinces in Cambodia.
Diplomatic Pressure Plan from Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump said he would call the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to demand an end to the fighting. "I think I'm scheduled to speak to them tomorrow," he said, quoted in his statement to reporters at the White House on Wednesday. The United States, along with China as the ASEAN chair and Malaysia, previously mediated a ceasefire in July.
In October, Trump supported continuing the declaration and promoted a new trade deal with both countries. However, Thailand suspended the agreement the following month.
Mass Displacement at the Border
In Thailand, over 400,000 people have sought refuge in shelters, according to a statement from Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri on Wednesday, as reported by Al Jazeera. "More than 400,000 people have been moved to safe shelters," he said. He added, "Civilians have had to evacuate in large numbers due to what we assessed as an imminent threat to their safety."
In Cambodia, Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said 101,229 people have sought refuge in protected areas and relatives' homes in five provinces. In Thailand, hundreds of families spent the night in a university building in Surin, which has been converted into a shelter.
Mutual Attacks between Thailand and Cambodia
The Thai military imposed a curfew in some parts of Sa Kaeo since Wednesday night. On the same day, Thailand reported that rockets fired from Cambodia fell near Phanom Dong Rak Hospital in Surin, a location previously hit in July. Patients and medical staff were reported to take shelter in bunkers.
According to Cambodianess, a Cambodian media site, Thai F-16 jets attacked two areas in Cambodia, while Thai shelling continued in three other locations. Matichon Online from Thailand also reported the deployment of F-16 jets to attack a military target in Cambodia on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, according to Thai military sources, Cambodian rockets and artillery fire targeted 12 frontline areas in four Thai provinces on Thursday morning. There have been no reports of casualties from these recent attacks.
