TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Regional Drinking Water Company (PDAM) Tirta Benteng in Tangerang stopped water production for seven hours following a chemical warehouse fire in the Taman Tekno BSD area, South Tangerang. The company halted production sourced from the Pintu Air 10 intake downstream of the Cisadane River from Monday, February 9, 2026, at 11:00 p.m. until Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 05:00 a.m. local time.
Secretary Head of PDAM Tirta Benteng, Budi Santoso, said the company took preventive measures to avoid contamination by shutting down raw water production and stopping distribution. "We stopped production as soon as the water passed through PDAM Kerta Rahardja (owned by the Tangerang Regency Government), because our intake sequence is the farthest downstream," Budi told Tempo on Tuesday afternoon.
Budi explained that the PDAM Tirta Benteng team immediately took samples of river water for laboratory testing. When they first checked the conditions, the team smelled a scent similar to kerosene. "The samples are still under testing. At that time, the river water smelled like kerosene," he said.
After the temporary shutdown, PDAM Tirta Benteng resumed production and distribution. Budi stated that if some customers have not received water, the supply may still be in the distribution process within the pipe network. "We apologize for this condition," he said.
PDAM Tirta Benteng also took re-samples from homes in the Kali Pasir area to ensure water quality. As a precaution, the company prepared 10 clean water tanks for customers in need.
To serve 165,000 customers, PDAM Tirta Benteng has a production capacity of 3,200 liters per second. Budi emphasized that the company does not distribute raw water directly. The PDAM processes water through physical and chemical methods, as well as disinfection according to technical standards.
"We urge customers to temporarily avoid using water for bathing, washing, and toilets (MCK) as a preventive measure," said Budi.
