Sudan Seeks International Trials Against RSF over War Crimes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Prime Minister of Sudan, Kamil Idris, has called for international courts to hold trials for atrocities committed by the rebel forces Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In an interview with the Switzerland newspaper Blick, published on Sunday, Idris rejected the idea of deploying foreign troops to his country, which has been embroiled in a civil war since April 2023.

"The international community has done too little," Idris said, as quoted from Al Arabiya. "We need acts, not just words. Every crime needs to be prosecuted in the courts – including at the international level," he said.

After 18 months of siege, bombing, and starvation, RSF seized El Fasher on October 26, 2025. RSF drove out the last stronghold of the army in the Darfur region of western Sudan. In the days following the capture of the city, survivors reported executions, looting, rape, and other atrocities, triggering international outrage.

Idris urged all UN member states to designate RSF as a terrorist organization and to combat this group. However, he is confident that Sudan will be able to overcome RSF and will not need a UN peacekeeping mission.

"International troops would undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is illegal, would only increase confusion and would be counterproductive," Idris said. "The Sudanese army and people are determined to save and liberate El Fasher."

The fall of El Fasher into the hands of RSF gave it full control over the five state capitals in Darfur, effectively dividing Sudan along an east-west axis. The RSF paramilitary group has formed its own self-declared rival government in Darfur, while the military controls the northern, eastern, and central regions of Sudan.

The civil war has raised concerns about the country's partition. Sudan has been divided with the declaration of independence by South Sudan in 2011.

RSF, which is a descendant of the Arab militia Janjaweed, has been accused of committing genocide in Darfur two decades ago. RSF has also been accused of ethnic massacres since the outbreak of the war.
