When the Eid homecoming season arrives, train stations are often crowded. The increased number of passengers has an impact during boarding. Passenger queues are always longer. During peak hours, the passenger flow often gets stuck at the boarding gate. For those in a hurry or irritated by the long queue, it can be quite annoying.

However, there's a way to speed up the queues, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has been using Face Recognition technology to make it easier for passengers so they don't need to show physical documents. In this technology, passenger data has been integrated with train ticket data.

This technology has been used since September 2022, to replace the use of paper tickets. With the boarding service equipped with cameras to identify identities through faces. For those of you who want to travel home by train, you need to know how to activate this feature.

Registration can be done by attaching the electronic identity card (e-KTP) to the e-KTP Reader device located at the Customer Service, Vending Machine, or Check-in Counter. By placing your right or left index finger on the scanner, the registration is complete.

After registration, passengers can go straight to the Face Recognition Boarding Gate approaching the departure time. Directing your face to the scanning machine, if the ticket and identity data match, the gate will open automatically. If passengers don't have an e-KTP or if the e-KTP is damaged, some stations provide manual boarding services.

In addition to using e-KTP, Face Recognition technology services can also be done through the Access by KAI application. Through the registration process by uploading personal data and a selfie used for system verification. Here's how to register for Face Recognition via the Access by KAI app.

  1. Open the account menu tab in Access by KAI.
  2. Select the Face Recognition Registration menu.
  3. Read the registration terms and conditions and click "Agree" after understanding them.
  4. Check your personal data such as Full Name, NIK, and Date of Birth.
  5. Click "Selfie Photo" to complete the verification process.
  6. Before taking a selfie, pay attention to the correct photo taking conditions.
  7. Click "Take KTP Photo" to take a selfie.
  8. After the selfie and personal data are complete and correct, click "Register Now".
  9. Confirm and ensure the data provided, then click "Yes, Register" to complete the registration.
  10. The registration process is successful and complete.

The Face Recognition technology uses user data with international standard ISO 27001. Passenger data is automatically stored for one year, and can also be deleted according to user's wishes. The stored data is only used for the boarding process.
