The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:

1. UN Warns Israel's Gaza Relocation Plan Could Be Forced Displacement

The UN human rights office on Tuesday expressed serious concern over Israel's proposal to collaborate with other countries, including the United States, on the so-called "voluntary" transfer of Palestinians out of Gaza.

The UN cautioned that such a plan could constitute forced transfer under international law. "This raises concerns with regard to forcible transfer," spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters at a UN press briefing in Geneva, as reported by Anadolu.

"The concept of voluntary transfers in the context that we're seeing in Gaza right now -- it's very questionable," Shamdasani said.

The UN has previously issued warnings against statements, including those by U.S. President Donald Trump, that suggest relocating Palestinians from Gaza.

2. Gov't Denies Claim that BRICS Accession Causes U.S. Tariff Imposition

Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno has denied that Indonesia's participation in the BRICS economic bloc is the reason behind the 32 percent reciprocal tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

He said that President Prabowo Subianto's attendance at the BRICS meeting is unrelated to the tariff's implementation, noting that several non-BRICS countries are also facing similar impositions from the United States.

"So, [it has] nothing to do with it. Many non-BRICS countries are also affected," Arif said at the Senayan Parliament complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

He explained that Indonesia still has time to negotiate with the White House regarding this reciprocal tariff. However, he declined to elaborate on the specific nature of the upcoming negotiations.

3. Jakarta's Air Pollution Reaches Chronic Phase, Activists Warn of Emergency

Environmental activists assert that air pollution in Jakarta and its surrounding areas has entered a chronic phase

They highlight that for the past decade, Jakarta's air quality has consistently been categorized as unhealthy, with an annual PM2.5 concentration reaching 46.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). This figure is more than three times the national safety limit.

Activists consider this situation an emergency. "Air pollution in Jakarta has entered the unhealthy category for the past ten years, and this can no longer be considered normal," stated Amalia S. Bendang, Coordinator of the Aliansi Udara Bersih (Clean Air Alliance) and Jaringan Rebut Kembali Langit Biru, to Tempo on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
