TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Liberian-flagged cargo ship Eternity C, operated by a Greek company, sank in the Red Sea after being attacked by Yemen’s Houthi group.
According to The Jerusalem Post, the assault occurred on the night of Monday, July 7, 2025, involving underwater drones and fast boats. The incident resulted in the deaths of two crew members.
This is the first fatal incident involving seafarers in the Red Sea since June 2024. The total number of casualties in the region has now reached six since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023. The Eternity C had 22 crew members on board, most of whom were Filipino.
Rescue Efforts Underway
According to Middle East Eye, several crew members were found floating in the sea wearing life jackets. Two maritime security sources reported that five people have been rescued so far.
"Search and rescue operations commenced overnight," said the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a branch of the British Royal Navy responsible for maritime surveillance, as quoted by Arab News on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The search for the remaining crew members continues.
Houthi Group Suspected of Carrying Out Attack
Although the Houthis have not officially claimed responsibility, the incident occurred just one day after they attacked and sank the merchant vessel Magic Seas. The group released propaganda videos showing armed, masked men boarding the vessel and explosions leading to its sinking.
Backed by Iran, the Houthi group has repeatedly targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict. They have described their actions as expressions of support for Palestinians in Gaza.
On Monday, the Houthis claimed the attack on the Magic Seas was due to the owning company’s ties to Israeli businesses and its use of Israeli ports.
US and UK Issue Condemnations
The United States Embassy in Yemen described the attack on the Eternity C as "the most violent" yet. The embassy blamed the Houthi for disrupting the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
Ambrey, a maritime security company based in the United Kingdom, also stated that the attack was likely carried out by the Houthis.
Ongoing threats in the Red Sea have forced many shipping companies to reroute their vessels around the southern tip of Africa. The Red Sea remains a critical maritime passage, accounting for about 12 percent of global trade.
