Russia Fires 728 Drones into Ukraine After Trump Vows More Arms Support

5 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Russia has launched another large-scale airstrike on Ukraine, continuing its assault that began with the 2022 invasion. According to Channel News, the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, with Russia deploying 728 drones and 13 missiles across Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that air defense systems intercepted 711 drones and destroyed at least seven missiles.

This strike surpassed the previous record of 550 drones and missiles used in a single offensive.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack came just as the international community was intensifying efforts to secure a ceasefire.

"This is a telling attack - and it comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace, to establish a ceasefire, and yet only Russia continues to rebuff them all," Zelensky wrote on social media.

He renewed calls for tougher sanctions on financial sources supporting Russia’s war, including nations that continue to purchase oil from Moscow.

Trump Vows More Weapons for Ukraine

The attack took place shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to send additional weapons to Ukraine. As reported by CBS News, Trump made the statement during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday night, July 7, 2025.

"We're going to send some more weapons. We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves," Trump said.

Trump also mentioned he is considering backing a Senate bill that proposes severe sanctions on Russia. The proposed legislation includes tariffs of up to 500 percent on countries importing oil, gas, uranium, and other Russian exports.

Since returning to office in early 2025, Trump pledged to bring a swift end to the war in Ukraine. However, initial talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled. Moscow continues to reject the unconditional ceasefire plan proposed by Trump and accepted by Kyiv.

Following Trump’s new commitment, Zelensky announced on Tuesday that he had ordered an expansion of diplomatic engagement with the United States to secure continued arms deliveries, particularly air defense systems.

This initiative reverses a recent U.S. Defense Department decision to temporarily suspend shipments of critical ammunition to Ukraine, despite growing Russian offensives.
