TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A six-year-old girl from Indonesia was killed after she and her mother were hit by a car in Chinatown, Singapore on Friday, confirmed by the police.

Singapore police said they received a report of an accident involving a car and two pedestrians along South Bridge Road on Friday around 11:50 a.m. local time.

The mother and daughter, who were tourists from Indonesia, were hit by a car in a parking lot beside the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, as reported by the Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao, quoted from Malay Mail.

Police stated that the 31-year-old mother and her daughter were conscious when taken to the Singapore General Hospital. However, the little girl later succumbed to her injuries.

A 38-year-old woman, the driver, was arrested by the police.

Photo of the incident, uploaded to the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page, showed a man holding the little girl at the roadside.

The photo caption indicated that the accident occurred as the driver was turning out of the parking lot.

A witness who said he was walking behind the victims described the event as the car emerged from the parking lot.

"I was the first pedestrian behind a mother and her daughter," the witness stated on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page.

He added that the driver seemed to be turning out from the parking lot without checking for pedestrians on her right. "[She] only looked to the left when turning right," the witness said.

The witness suspected that the vehicle then suddenly accelerated. "After that, she suddenly accelerated, causing the rear wheel to run over the mother’s stomach. I do not understand why she accelerated so quickly while exiting the car park," the witness said.
