TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven people were killed and four remain missing while climbing a mountain in Nepal after an avalanche struck the 5,630-meter-high base camp of Yalung Ri peak. The search for the four missing individuals is ongoing. The incident was reported by the Kathmandu Post as quoted by Antara on Monday, citing the Nepalese police.

According to the Nepalese website Himalayan Times as quoted by Bhaskar, the incident occurred around 09:00 a.m. A team of 15 was heading towards Gaurishankar and Yalung Ri when the avalanche struck near the base camp.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police of Dolakha District, Nepal, Gyan Kumar Mahato, among the victims of the snow avalanche were three U.S. citizens, one Canadian, one Italian, and two Nepalese nationals, as reported by the Kathmandu Post.

The avalanche occurred while the Nepalese and foreign climbers, along with local guides, were at the main base camp of Yalung Ri, preparing to climb the higher Dolma Khang peak, which stands at 6,332 meters, stated a police representative.

Earlier on the same day, the Kathmandu Post reported that 15 individuals, including foreign climbers and Nepalese guides, could not be contacted following the avalanche.

Five Nepalese guides who returned to the base camp sustained injuries.

Rescue operations were halted in the evening. Earlier, rescue missions were delayed due to flight restrictions in the Rolwaling area. Special permission is required to fly helicopters in that area.

Although permission had been obtained, bad weather conditions caused further delays, according to the Kathmandu Post.

The local district chair, Nimgeli Sherpa, stated that the government had been informed multiple times for assistance since morning, but rescue operations started late. Since Rolwaling is a restricted area, it takes time to obtain helicopter permission, further slowing down the rescue process.

Police stated that the Nepalese Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force were also involved in the search and rescue operation. One helicopter was also deployed, but could not reach the location due to bad weather.

Yalung Ri is located near the Nepal-China border. This area is considered a less crowded and technically difficult climbing zone. Foreign tourists need special permission to climb in this area.

Yalung Ri is prone to avalanches. In 2019, a French mountain climbing team was also stranded in this area, while many mountain climbers died on this route after the 2015 earthquake.
