TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to construct a 40-story building for the Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia/MUI), along with several Islamic institutions and community organizations, in Central Jakarta.
The building, which will cover around 4,000 square meters, will be built on land allocated by the government in front of the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout, one of Jakarta’s most prominent landmarks.
“It should not only be luxury hotels or shopping malls. We also need buildings for Islamic institutions,” Prabowo said during the inauguration of the MUI leadership board for the 2025–2030 period at Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
Prabowo said the plan followed a request made several months earlier by Minister of Religious Affairs Nazaruddin Umar, who had noted the unclear status of the MUI’s current office location. At present, the MUI headquarters is located at Jalan Proklamasi No. 51, Pegangsaan, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
“Later, the offices of Islamic institutions will be located right in the heart of the capital,” Prabowo said.
The president also spoke about plans to establish an institution dedicated to managing community funds. According to him, if properly managed, such funds could reach up to Rp500 trillion (approximately US$32 billion) per year.
