Prabowo Targets $50 Billion Annual Return from Danantara

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said the sovereign wealth fund, Danantara Investment Management Agency, is expected to contribute around US$50 billion, or roughly Rp800 trillion, to Indonesia’s state treasury each year.

Prabowo made the remarks during the agency’s first anniversary commemoration at Wisma Danantara in South Jakarta.

In his speech, the president called on Danantara to achieve a minimum return on assets (RoA) of 5 percent. Based on his calculations, a 5 percent return from the roughly US$1 trillion in assets managed by the agency could generate about US$50 billion annually for the state.

"If the return on assets is only 5 percent, it means Danantara has to return US$50 billion to the country every year, which is equivalent to Rp800 trillion. So, Danantara's leadership, your target is still far," Prabowo said on Wednesday evening, March 11, 2026.

He added that companies with strong governance typically achieve a higher return on assets. According to Prabowo, a well-performing company should aim for at least a 10 percent RoA.

"If it's good, it should be 12 percent. If it's great, it should be 15 percent. We should set a good target, which is 10 percent," he said.

Prabowo acknowledged that such targets cannot be achieved immediately but stressed that strong leadership and commitment are essential for effective management.

"Therefore, in the first year, I express my gratitude, I congratulate you on your achievements, but I remind you that the target is still quite far," he said.

The president did not disclose the agency’s actual RoA for 2025. However, he said he had received a report indicating that Danantara helped increase the RoA of Indonesia’s state-owned enterprises by around 300 percent last year.

Prabowo also stressed the importance of strict oversight over state-owned enterprises managed by Danantara to prevent any loss of state assets. He described these enterprises as the “lifeblood of the Indonesian nation,” warning that mismanagement could have serious consequences for the country.

Despite the challenges, Prabowo said Indonesia’s future remains promising and called for unity and cooperation amid global uncertainty.

"We face crises bravely. Crisis is an opportunity. Let's unite, let's be harmonious, let's work hard," he said.

The president further emphasized the need for strong supervision of Danantara, noting that several sovereign investment agencies in wealthy countries have suffered losses due to poor management.

He urged the agency’s leadership to manage the country’s assets carefully and responsibly.

"I entrust caution, awareness, and vigilance. Take care of yourselves. Remember, the hopes of the entire nation, all the people, are on your shoulders. You guard and manage the wealth of our children and grandchildren," he said.
