TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said the country’s Muslim community serves as an example to the world for promoting peace and social harmony.

According to Prabowo, Indonesian Muslims uphold tranquility, reject hatred, and prioritize justice. “Muslims here do not pursue hatred and instead prioritize peace. They are a community that is not afraid to uphold justice,” he said.

The president made the remarks during the inauguration of the Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia/MUI) leadership for the 2025–2030 period at Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Prabowo emphasized the importance of unity between religious scholars and government leaders in addressing national challenges.

He cited a verse from Surah Ar-Ra’d, which states that God will not change the condition of a people unless they change what is within themselves.

To achieve such change, Prabowo called on clerics and national leaders to unite for the country’s future. He said unity can only be realized when people overcome suspicion and hatred.

“Competition and differences are natural and even beneficial,” Prabowo said. “But after competing, all elements must come together for the nation’s well-being. Respect all communities and all people.”

The inauguration took place amid a series of national challenges, including floods and landslides in several regions. Chair of the event’s organizing committee Nusron Wahid, who also heads the MUI Disaster Management Division, said the gathering included joint prayers as a spiritual response to these crises.

“The united prayer for the nation’s salvation serves as both a spiritual effort and a message of unity and empathy for our brothers and sisters affected by disasters,” Nusron said in an official MUI Digital statement on Friday, February 6, 2026.

The prayers were led by several prominent religious figures, including KH Abdul Manan Ghani, KH Mahfud Assirun, Habib Ali bin Abdurrahman Al Habsyi, Habib Ahmad bin Ali Assegaf, and preacher Abdul Somad. The formal inauguration of the MUI leadership was led by MUI Chair KH Anwar Iskandar.
