TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto stated that for the first time, the Saudi Arabian government has allowed another country to own land in the Holy Land. The head of state claimed that Saudi Arabia even amended its laws to allow Indonesia to build the Hajj Complex in Mecca.
Prabowo made this announcement during the event "Mujahadah Kubro Satu Abad" (100th-anniversary) of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) held at Gajayana Stadium in Malang City.
"I want to report here, in front of the ulama, in front of the big family of NU, that Indonesia is honored for the first time, given the right to own land in the holy city of Mecca. We will build a Hajj Village in Mecca for Hajj pilgrims and those performing Umrah," said Prabowo in Malang, East Java, on Sunday, February 8, 2026, as broadcasted by the President's Secretariat on YouTube.
Prabowo ensured that Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims in the future will receive the best services and decent accommodations while performing their religious duties in Saudi Arabia. "There should be no more doubts, no room for anything else. The services will be the best, and I am determined to reduce the cost of Hajj for the Indonesian people," said Prabowo.
He hopes that Indonesian pilgrims will be able to use the Hajj Complex in Mecca within three years. "Soon, in a few months, I think we will have around 1,000 rooms, but we will continue to build more," Prabowo said.
Furthermore, Prabowo stated that Indonesia's initiative to build the Hajj Village in Mecca has attracted the interest of several other countries. "This is the first time in history that the Saudi government has allowed another nation to own land in the holy city of Mecca. They have amended their laws, specifically to honor the Indonesian nation," said Prabowo.
He added, "As a result of our initiative, many other countries are now following suit. Insha Allah, the Indonesian Hajj Village will be the first to be established."
