TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto will allocate a budget of Rp5 trillion to state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to procure 30 new commuter rail (KRL) train sets for the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek).
This commitment was made directly to the President Director of PT KAI, Bobby Rasyidin, during the inauguration of the New Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
According to Prabowo, the KAI Director informed him that the cost to purchase one new train set was US$9 million, or approximately Rp150 billion. PT KAI had consequently proposed a budget of Rp4.8 trillion. "I agree. I will even allocate it. He proposed Rp4.8 trillion. I agree, not Rp4.8 trillion, but Rp5 trillion," the President said.
Prabowo then asked Bobby Rasyidin for a timeline on adding the new trains. While Bobby initially committed to six months, Prabowo extended the deadline to one year.
"Six months? I'll give you a year. Otherwise, he'll be stressed and won't be able to sleep, right? If you can do it in six months, okay. But it has to be done in a year. The people are witnesses to this, right? So, there will be an additional 30 new carriages," said Prabowo.
Prabowo emphasized that he would not hesitate to allocate funds for the people's interests. He argued that trains are a critical mode of transportation that primarily benefits middle- and lower-class citizens.
"If you're wealthy, you can take a plane, you can drive a car. But most people will benefit from trains," Prabowo said. "That's why our trains, I've instructed, need to be expanded and enlarged."
