Over 18,000 Workers Suffer from Layoffs in Early 2025, Most from Central Java

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Manpower reported that as many as 18,610 workers were laid off in the first two months of 2025, with Central Java logging the most layoffs.

“Central Java recorded 57.37 percent of the reported layoffs,” read the report on the ministry’s Manpower One Data page, quoted on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

A total of 10,677 workers suffered from layoffs in Central Java, which lines up with the bankruptcy and mass termination of textile giant Sritex’s workers. The company, which headquartered in Sukoharjo in Central Java, terminated over 10,000 workers due to its bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, in Riau, the Ministry of Manpower recorded 3,530 people experiencing layoffs as of February 2025. In Jakarta, 2,650 workers also lost their jobs. In East Java, 978 workers experienced layoffs, 411 people in Banten, 87 in Bali, 77 in South Sulawesi, and 72 in Central Kalimantan. In West Java, 23 workers were affected by layoffs.

Last year, from January to December 2024, the Ministry of Manpower recorded 77,965 workers experiencing layoffs. The highest number of workers experiencing layoffs was in Jakarta, around 21.91 percent of the reported number.

The Ministry recorded 17,085 laid-off workers in Jakarta in 2024, followed by Central Java with 13,130 workers, Banten with 13,042 people, and West Java with 10,661 workers. Meanwhile, layoffs in East Java during that period were reported to have occurred to 5,327 workers, 2,699 workers in Yogyakarta, 2,055 in Central Sulawesi, and 1,908 in Bangka Belitung.

Recently, a wave of layoffs is reported to have hit the domestic industries. Several companies were reported to have been forced to close their operations and lay off a total of 3,200 workers. Some of these companies include PT Sanken Indonesia, PT Yamaha Music Product Asia, PT Tokai Kagu, PT Danbi International Garut, and PT Bapintri.

Furthermore, Sritex closed its factory on March 1, 2025, and announced mass layoffs of 10,969 employees, spread across four Sritex Group companies, namely PT Sritex Sukoharjo, PT Bitratex Semarang, PT Sinar Panja Jaya Semarang, and PT Primayuda Boyolali.

But Minister of Manpower Yassierli briefly denied the mass layoffs occurring throughout the country, claiming that not all information about the layoffs are true to the facts.

“Some companies, if we read from the media, were reported to have terminated their workers. But after we checked, not all of them did,” said Yassierli at the Ministry of Manpower office, Gatot Subroto area, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 5.

He claimed to have directly inspected the conditions of several companies reported to have laid off their workers. He said some of them actually had the number of employees increasing. “In my opinion, we must see it proportionally, in regards to the news about the ‘storm’ of layoffs,” he said.
