Malaysian Ambassador Confirms PM Anwar Ibrahim to Attend D-8 Summit in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Dato' Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin announced that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will definitely attend the D-8 Summit in Jakarta in April.

"God willing, PM (Anwar Ibrahim) will be present at the D-8 Summit," Ambassador Hasrin said after hosting a fast-breaking meal with the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday evening (March 4).

He stated that the Malaysian Embassy will make the best possible preparations to ensure PM Anwar's visit to Indonesia and participation in the D-8 Summit run smoothly.

Ambassador Hasrin also expressed his hope that Malaysia will achieve its goals, both in the context of bilateral relations and cooperation within the D-8, through PM Anwar's participation in the OECD's agenda.

"Malaysia continues to support Indonesia as the D-8 chairman," he added.

Previously, in a special interview with ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday (March 3), Ambassador Hasrin expressed confidence that Indonesia's success in chairing ASEAN in 2023 guaranteed Indonesia's success in holding the D-8 leadership for the 2026-2027 period.

He made strengthening trade and investment, including the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSMEs) sector, a priority that he would promote during Indonesia's D-8 leadership.

"Malaysia's industrial strength is generally supported by MSMEs. Therefore, we want the D-8 to play a role in strengthening the potential of MSMEs in our country, as well as MSMEs in other D-8 countries," said Ambassador Hasrin.

Malaysia consistently encourages growth and investment among D-8 member countries by optimizing preferential trade agreements and encouraging collaboration between D-8 business sectors through business forums, he said.

The D-8 is an economic cooperation group formed in 1997 by eight developing countries: Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. Azerbaijan will become the ninth member in 2025.

Indonesia's current chairmanship carries the theme "Navigating Global Shifts: Strengthening Equality, Solidarity, and Cooperation for Shared Prosperity," which promotes adaptation to global economic dynamics, inclusiveness, and resilience.

Indonesia will host the D-8 Summit in Jakarta next April.
