TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia saw a decline in air passenger numbers in September 2025, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Pudji Ismartini reported that the decrease was observed at several major airports, including Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta and I Gusti Ngurah Rai in Bali.
“Overall, domestic air transport passengers fell by 5.13 percent to 4.8 million people, while international passengers dropped 6.96 percent to 1.8 million in September 2025,” Pudji said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, November 3, 2025.
Among domestic flights, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport experienced the largest monthly decline, with a 15.07 percent decrease, followed by Kualanamu (6.62 percent), Soekarno-Hatta (5.46 percent), Hasanuddin (3.43 percent), and Juanda (1.97 percent).
For international flights, Hasanuddin Airport recorded the steepest drop at 17.37 percent, followed by Ngurah Rai (9.02 percent), Soekarno-Hatta (7.21 percent), Kualanamu (1.95 percent), and Juanda (1.79 percent).
Pudji noted that the decline at Ngurah Rai was partly due to the end of the holiday season in countries that contribute most foreign tourists to Bali.
In contrast, river, lake, and ferry transport (ASDP) saw a 1.46 percent increase to 3.9 million passengers in September, driven by heightened mobility during long weekend holidays.
From January to September 2025, the cumulative number of ASDP passengers reached 39.2 million, a 15.12 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Passenger growth was observed at all major ports, including Bakauheni (32.40 percent), Ketapang (26.81 percent), Merak (24.56 percent), Gilimanuk (20.41 percent), and Pototano (9.93 percent).
Other transport modes also experienced declines in September. Domestic sea transport passengers dropped 5.62 percent to 2.3 million, while train passengers decreased 1.23 percent to 4.5 million.
Despite these monthly declines, most transportation modes recorded annual growth (year-on-year). The highest increase occurred in domestic sea transport, up 12.57 percent, while domestic air travel declined 11.24 percent compared to the same month in 2024.
