TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has considered the impeachment proposal against Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, raised by the Retired Soldiers Forum, as an expression of democratic aspiration. He emphasized that such proposals are permissible within a democratic framework.
"Yes, it's an aspiration. A proposal, yes, it's allowed in a democracy like ours," Jokowi told reporters at his residence in Sumber Village, Banjarsari District, Solo, Central Java, on Monday, May 5, 2025.
However, he underscored that President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka have already received a mandate from the people through the 2024 Presidential Election, which they won.
"Everyone already knows that President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka have received a mandate from the people through the general election," he said.
Regarding the impeachment procedure, he noted that it involves a lengthy process.
"Yes, everyone also knows the process through the MPR (People's Consultative Assembly), must go through the MK (Constitutional Court), back to the MPR. I think the constitutional process is like that," he explained.
He clarified that impeachment can be initiated if a national leader is found guilty of corruption, egregious misconduct, or similar offenses. "Seen in our constitution, it's already clear and explicit," he said.
Jokowi declined to comment on whether he had communicated with Gibran regarding the impeachment proposal, responding with a simple shake of his head to media inquiries.
The impeachment proposal against Gibran was initially presented during a gathering of retired soldiers of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and community leaders on April 17, 2025. The retirees' demands were endorsed by 332 retired middle and high-ranking TNI officers.
Gibran's impeachment is one of eight demands put forth by the retired military personnel. The group also called for a return to legal frameworks and governance aligned with the 1945 Constitution.
Additional demands included support for the Red and White Cabinet's work program, with the exception of the Nusantara Capital City mega-project in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan; the cessation of several national strategic projects, such as Pantai Indah Kapuk 2 in Jakarta-Banten and Rempang Eco City in Batam, Riau Islands; and the halting and repatriation of foreign workers.
Furthermore, the Prabowo administration was urged to regulate mining management in accordance with the 1945 Constitution; replace Red and White Cabinet members implicated in criminal activities or possessing dual loyalty; and restore the Indonesian National Police's function as a security and public order force under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
