TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government and the House of Representatives (DPR) have agreed to receive a grant of patrol ships from Japan, which will be sent soon. The Japanese government provides a grant worth 1.9 billion Japanese yen, or equivalent to Rp205 billion.

“The nominal value, if shipped, is approximately between three or four patrol ships with a length of 14 meters, a width of five meters, and a speed reaching 40 knots,” said Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto after a meeting with Commission I of the DPR at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

According to him, the receipt of the grant of ships from Japan is capable of providing a positive impact on the performance of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) to secure the archipelago’s waters. Moreover, he said, the Indonesian waters are very vast and have the potential to pose security risks.

He also highlighted the impact on the operational aspect of receiving the grant of ships from Japan for the Indonesian Navy.

“These patrol ships are fast and agile, so they are very suitable to be operated in Indonesian waters,” he said.

He emphasized that the grant of the ships also does not burden the state fiscal. Because, according to him, the receipt of defense and security equipment does not incur any state budget at all.

“From the aspect of foreign relations, this grant will strengthen Indonesia’s cooperation with Japan, especially between the Ministry of Defense,” said Donny.

At the same time, the Chair of Commission I of the DPR, Utut Adianto, said that the grant of patrol ships from Japan is intended for the Indonesian Navy. However, he said that until now the ships have not been sent to the country.

According to him, the delivery of the grant aid in the form of ships will be carried out after being determined in the upcoming plenary session of the DPR.

“After that, usually the goods will be sent to Indonesia and can be used. Then the ministry will manage,” said the PDI Perjuangan politician in the DPR Building, Jakarta.
