TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, stressed that sports branches failing to meet the gold medals target at the 2025 SEA Games will be subject to evaluation. This will become the basis for future priority funding and long-term programs for flagship sports branches.
"For sports branches that have yet to meet the gold medal targets, it is worth noting that their performances have been under review since the SEA Games," said Erick in an official statement in Jakarta on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
By the third day of the SEA Games 2025 in Thailand, several sports branches had not met their targets. Canoeing, which set a target of two gold medals, only secured one gold through the Mixed Kayak Four 500-meter event. MTB Cycling, with a target of one gold, failed to achieve it and only brought home two silvers. Rendy Varera Sanjaya eventually clinched a gold medal in MTB on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
According to Erick, SEA Games achievements will determine which sports branches are deserving to be deployed for international multi-event competitions. "We will implement a promotion and relegation system. All targets must be measurable and transparent," he stated.
But Erick said he appreciated the sports branches that exceeded expectations and contributed gold medals beyond the initial targets.
On December 10, 2025, the Indonesian contingent secured five gold medals, surpassing the daily target of four gold medals. Three branches caused surprises: swimming, taekwondo, and petanque.
In swimming, Jason Donovan Yusuf secured the gold in the men's 100-meter backstroke, despite being previously sidelined. Taekwondo added one gold through the men's poomsae team: Muhammad Alfi Kusuma, Muhammad Hafizh Fachrur Rhozi, and Muhammad Rizal. Petanque also surprised with Andri Irawan securing gold in the Men's Singles event.
Meanwhile, badminton succeeded in meeting the gold medal target. The Indonesian men's team emerged victorious after defeating Malaysia 3-0.
Erick said these achievements demonstrate the fighting spirit of Indonesian athletes, despite the SEA Games being an interim target. "But we must maximize our efforts and show the nation's high fighting spirit," he said. Indonesia's total gold count is now six, following the addition of the gold medal from cyclist Rendy Varera Sanjaya in the Mountain Bike Men's Cross Country event.
