TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) will build a solar panel factory in collaboration with a Chinese company to support the plan to export electricity to Singapore. "What is our position on exporting electricity to Singapore? We will soon break ground on a collaboration with one of the top solar panel manufacturers," said Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development of Pertamina NRE, Fadli Rahman, in a press conference after signing a share subscription agreement in Jakarta on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
Fadli explained that constructing the solar panel factory would be the initial step of Pertamina NRE's support for the green electricity export program. In addition, they are also exploring the potential to operate as a developer of renewable energy projects. However, he mentioned that the most realistic initial step is to enter the manufacturing sector first.
On the same occasion, John Anis, CEO of Pertamina NRE, highlighted the significant potential of the ASEAN Power Grid, a regional initiative to support the trade of green electricity in the Southeast Asian region. He stated that although its implementation may not occur in the next one to two years, Indonesia must not be left behind in developing this cross-border energy ecosystem.
Previously, Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Minister of Energy and Science and Technology of Singapore, Tan See Leng, regarding the export of clean electricity with a capacity of up to 3.4 gigawatts (GW) by 2035. The signing took place on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources office in Jakarta.
The cooperation includes three main memoranda of understanding: the development of sustainable industrial zones; interconnection and cross-border electricity trade using low-carbon, renewable energy technology; and collaboration on cross-border carbon capture and storage.
The government hopes that these efforts can strengthen Indonesia's position as one of the region's main suppliers of green electricity while promoting the growth of the domestic clean energy industry.
