TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Mount Semeru experienced a series of eruptions on the morning of Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Three consecutive eruptions—each sending ash clouds up to 700 meters above the summit—were recorded by seismographs at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) located on Mount Sawu, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency.
Observation post officer Yadi Yuliandi reported that the three eruptions occurred at 4:49 a.m., 6:24 a.m., and 8:09 a.m. local time. The eruption at 8:09 a.m. produced an ash column approximately 700 meters above the summit, or about 4,376 meters above sea level. The ash plume was observed to be gray with thick intensity, drifting westward. Seismic instruments recorded the event with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 117 seconds.
Over the past 24 hours leading up to early Tuesday morning, seismic monitoring recorded various types of volcanic activity. These included 52 eruption quakes with amplitudes ranging from 10 to 22 millimeters and durations between 49 and 201 seconds.
Additionally, there were eight emission quakes with amplitudes between 4 and 9 millimeters, lasting 27 to 65 seconds. One harmonic tremor was detected with a 6-millimeter amplitude and a duration of 149 seconds. Two deep tectonic quakes were also recorded, with amplitudes of 10 to 20 millimeters, S-P intervals of 14 to 36 seconds, and durations of 37 to 89 seconds.
Despite the activity, Semeru's alert level remains at Level II, or "Waspada" (Alert). "The activity status of Semeru is still at the Alert level," Yadi said in his Tuesday report.
In light of this status, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has issued several safety recommendations. Residents and visitors are advised to refrain from any activity within the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, within an 8-kilometer radius from the summit (the eruption center).
People should also stay at least 500 meters away from the riverbanks of Besuk Kobokan, due to the risk of hot clouds and lava flows that could extend up to 13 kilometers from the peak.
The public is further advised to avoid a 3-kilometer radius around the crater or summit due to the danger of flying incandescent rocks. Authorities also urge vigilance regarding potential hot clouds, lava avalanches, and lava flows along rivers and valleys originating from Semeru’s peak—especially Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat—as well as smaller tributaries of Besuk Kobokan that may carry volcanic debris.
