TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through the Space Research Center (PRA) and the Aviation and Space Research Organization (ORPA), is committed to developing global-scale space research. This commitment is manifested through developing research infrastructure, using international data, and exploring strategic collaborations, including with NASA.
"We welcome the visit of the United States Embassy to the Space Research Center (PRA), considering our close relationship with NASA. Many of our researchers use data from NASA to support space research," said Emanuel Sungging Mumpuni, Head of PRA, when receiving the visit of the United States Embassy at the Samaun Samadikun Science and Technology Area (KST) in Bandung, cited on Monday, April 28, 2025.
In his written statement, Emanuel explained that PRA has four Research Groups: the Sun and Its Activity Research Group, the Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation Research Group, the Astronomy and Observatory Research Group, and the Space Environment Dynamics Research Group.
Senior Researcher at PRA, Tiar Dani, explained that their research center uses solar storm activity data from NASA. "Through this visit, we hope to obtain ongoing data to support the research of solar storm activity," said Tiar.
Chairman of the Sun and Its Activity Research Group, Johan Muhamad, also added that their research focuses on solar activity, space weather, and solar physics. "We need solar data as a reference to support the physics approach in our research," said Johan.
Furthermore, Thomas Djamaluddin, Principal Researcher at PRA, explained the importance of the National Observatory (Obnas) currently being built in Timau, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) as BRIN's research infrastructure. "BRIN is currently building Obnas Timau on Mount Timau, Kupang, NTT. This observatory will be equipped with a 3.8-meter telescope, making it the largest telescope in Southeast Asia," he said.
Thomas hopes Obnas Timau can attract the interest of the younger generation, especially the local community in Timau, to study astronomy. "We hope that the presence of Obnas Timau can be an attraction for the local community to study astronomical and physics phenomena."
Sungging and Thomas hope that the visit from the United States Embassy could open up research collaboration opportunities with NASA and serve as a bridge for researchers and the local community around the Timau Observatory to continue their education in astronomy, physics, and space at universities in the United States.
