TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Plenary Session of the House of Representatives has agreed to accept a patrol boat grant from Japan worth 1.9 billion Yen, equivalent to Rp205 billion. The grant for the Indonesian Navy is part of Japan's Official Security Assistance (OSA) program.
Lawmakers approved the grant after House Commission I presented the results of the discussion with the Ministry of Defense.
In his report, Deputy Chair of DPR Commission I Dave Akbarshah Fikarno stated that the approval for the grant of foreign defense and security equipment had been discussed with the government on February 10, 2026.
"The DPR Commission I has agreed to accept the 18M Class Patrol Boat grant worth 1.9 billion Yen from the Japanese government for the Indonesian Navy," Dave said at the plenary session at the DPR Complex, Jakarta, on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
The Golkar Party politician said the grant request was filed by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on November 24, 2025. DPR approval was mandatory in receiving gifts or loans from foreign parties.
The plenary session, led by House Speaker Puan Maharani, decided to approve the grant request. On the same occasion, DPR also approved the cancellation of the plan to accept a grant from South Korea as notified through a letter from the Minister of Defense dated January 27, 2026.
Earlier, Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto said accepting the ship grant from Japan would have a positive impact on the Indonesian Navy performance. Moreover, he said, Indonesia's waters are very vast and vulnerable to risks.
He also highlighted the operational aspects of accepting the ship grant from Japan for the Indonesian Navy. "This patrol boat is fast and agile, making it very suitable for operation in Indonesian waters," he said after a meeting with DPR Commission I at the DPR Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
He emphasized that this ship grant would not burden the state's finances. According to him, accepting foreign defense and security equipment does not incur any state budget expenditure.
"From a foreign relations perspective, this grant will strengthen Indonesia's cooperation with Japan, especially between the Ministry of Defense," said Donny.
