TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Huawei has introduced the Ascend 920 as an artificial intelligence chip, following the 910 series. The new product was unveiled at a partner conference. Mass production is estimated to begin in the middle of this year.
"Huawei’s Ascend 920 reveal caught a few industry insiders by surprise, especially as it was made almost immediately after the White House announced the ban on Nvidia’s H20 and AMD’s MI308," cited from Tom's Hardware on Monday, April 21, 2025.
According to the report, the new AI chip emerged just one day after the extension of the export ban on AI chips from the United States to China. However, Nvidia's H20 chip is still a popular choice among companies in China.
The Ascend 910 AI chip is considered to have already achieved about 60 percent of Nvidia's H100 performance. On the other hand, the next-generation Ascend 920, which is expected to use a 6-nanometer process node, is projected to exceed 900 TFLOPs per card and boast a 4 TB/s memory bandwidth using HBM3 modules.
"Furthermore, its 920C variant, which is built for Transformer and Mixture of Experts models, will also reportedly improve efficiency by about 30% to 40% compared to its predecessor," wrote Tom's Hardware.
In addition to the Ascend 920, Huawei also introduced the AI CloudMatrix 384 at the same partner conference as the unveiling of the latest chip. This solution should perform better than Nvidia's GB200, but with higher power consumption costs.
Before Huawei introduced the Ascend 920, the United States government, on April 9, 2025, stated that the H20 chip required a license for export to China, including Hong Kong and Macau. Citing the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the United States government has indicated that these licensing requirements address the risks that the covered products could be used or diverted to supercomputing activities in China.
