TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is taking strides towards decarbonizing its vital maritime sector through a landmark collaboration announced at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit on April 15, 2025. PT HDF Energy Indonesia, a subsidiary of French hydrogen power specialist HDF Energy, has joined forces with Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, state-owned electricity giant PT PLN, and ferry operator PT ASDP to conduct a joint study on utilizing locally produced green hydrogen to power the nation’s waterways.

This strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underscores Indonesia’s commitment to achieving its ambitious net-zero emissions target by 2060, with a specific focus on transforming the energy landscape of its extensive maritime and ferry transport networks.

The initiative aligns perfectly with Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission Roadmap for the Energy Sector and the recently launched National Hydrogen Roadmap, both of which identify the transportation sector, particularly maritime, as a crucial area for the deployment of hydrogen technologies.

The collaborative study will receive support and co-funding from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), highlighting the global significance of this endeavor.

The initial focus will be on Eastern Indonesia, a region rich in renewable energy resources and home to numerous strategic ferry routes operated by ASDP. This region is also the site of HDF Energy’s ambitious plans to develop 23 Renewstable® hydrogen power plants, representing a potential investment of US$2.3 billion.

The landmark MoU was officially signed by key representatives from each organization, including Capt. Hendri Ginting from the Ministry of Transportation, Hartanto Wibowo from PT PLN (Persero), Rio Theodore Nathalianto Lasse from PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, Tri Susanto from PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna, and Mathieu Geze from HDF Energy.

Capt. Hendri Ginting, M.M, Director of Shipping and Seafarer of the Ministry of Transportation, expressed his enthusiasm for the MoU as noted in a press release, "Our Ministry of Transportation, as the initiator of a study on retrofitting ships into hybrid hydrogen and battery system vessels, has been selected by the IMO under the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Accelerator Project."

Jose Matheickal, Director of the Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division at the IMO, said he was pleased to support Indonesia in exploring clean energy pathways for shipping. "This initiative demonstrates how national leadership, coupled with multi-stakeholder collaboration, can lay the groundwork for meaningful progress toward a zero-emission maritime future," he said.
