TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that President Prabowo Subianto's offer to travel directly to Tehran, Iran, to help de-escalate tensions in the Gulf region aligns with national foreign policy principles.
Ministry Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated that President Prabowo has offered himself as a facilitator for dialogue or negotiation to help alleviate tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel. "This is, of course, consistent with the active non-alignment policy to continue pushing for a peaceful resolution and preventing the spread of conflict," Yvonne said during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, March 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
She stated that President Prabowo will undertake the trip and fulfill the promised mandate if his offer is approved by all conflicting parties.
In connection with this, Yvonne assured that the ministry is ready to assist the President in carrying out the mediation plan according to the directives provided. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is basically ready to coordinate with related ministries and certainly prepare in accordance with the president's instructions," Yvonne said.
The Chairperson of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), Jimly Asshiddiqie, mentioned after a meeting between Muslim scholars, clerics, and intellectuals with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace on Thursday night that the President intends to go directly to Iran.
President Prabowo, in that meeting, revealed his plan to help alleviate the escalation in the Middle East, which he will undertake alongside Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
"He (President Prabowo) mentioned that before this meeting, he had a phone call with the Prime Minister of Pakistan," Jimly said. "And what I am grateful for, the Prime Minister of Pakistan is willing to visit Tehran together with President Prabowo. That was explained earlier by the President," said the former Chairperson of the Constitutional Court (MK).
President Prabowo, Jimly added, explained that the intention for this mediation is primarily aimed at alleviating the ongoing escalation. "The Ayatollah has been killed; offering peace, but not in that context, but this is to prevent escalation," he said. According to Jimly, President Prabowo's intention to alleviate the escalation was well received by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
