TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods and landslides struck several districts in South Nias regency in North Sumatra on Thursday, after heavy rain and strong winds lashed the region. In Ndraso Village, Maniamolo District, floodwater reaches up to 1.5 meters high and inundated 4 hectares of rice fields.

The Chief of South Nias Police Resort, Police Grand Commissioner Ferry Mulyana Sunarya, said torrential downpour and strong winds have triggered floods and landslides overnight. According to Ferry, landslides occurred in Hilionaha Village, Onolalu District.

"Although there were no casualties, the landslide material blocked the road, causing cars and trucks carrying agricultural products to be unable to pass," Ferry told Tempo on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

Floods also struck Sifaoroasi Village, Gomo District, where water rose up to 2.3 meters above the river surface. The overflowing river also swept away one hut unit owned by residents. The Sifaoroasi River water rose significantly compared to the previous day, and appears murky.

"This has prompted personnel from the South Nias Resort Police and Sectoral Police to be on alert and obliged to report and monitor the potential for floods and landslides to anticipate their impact on the residents," said Ferry.

To anticipate hydro-meteorological disasters, the South Nias Police Resort, together with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), will be deployed to disseminate information on safe evacuation to the locals.

"The South Nias Police also coordinate with the Search and Rescue Agency to prepare a health team from the South Nias Police Health Department and personnel responsible for traffic diversion arrangements," said Ferry.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast that the Nias Islands will be hit by continuous rain on Thursday, with light to moderate intensity.
