TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Indonesia Futsal Federation (FFI) Michael Victor Sianipar is awaiting progress regarding Indonesia's nomination as the host of the 2028 Futsal World Cup. He stated that communication with the government has been established for some time regarding Indonesia's advancement as a candidate.
However, further progress has not been intensively communicated by either party. "We are still waiting for the development. Yesterday, I also had a brief meeting with Pak Erick Thohir," said Michael in Jakarta on Monday, February 9, 2026, as reported by Antara.
Michael revealed that the plan for Indonesia to be nominated as the host of the 2028 Futsal World Cup has been discussed since 2025. In the communication, he mentioned that Chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir had conveyed Indonesia's intention to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
"He also told me that it had been conveyed to the FIFA President. But that was last year. And indeed, the Futsal World Cup is different from football. Usually, football is decided far in advance," said Michael.
Prior to this, the government, through Erick Thohir, emphasized that Indonesia would step forward as a candidate to host the 2028 Futsal World Cup.
According to Erick, the hosting of the 2026 Futsal Asia Cup at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta from January 27 to February 7 was crucial for Indonesia to apply as the host of the 2028 Futsal World Cup.
However, Erick also acknowledged challenges in this nomination. If Indonesia is chosen, the Futsal World Cup has the potential to be held for two consecutive editions in the same region. According to Erick, this requires further communication with FIFA as the organizer of the international futsal tournament.
