TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi Saengsuri Songthong is investigating a video that shows foreign tourists smoking and drinking alcohol in the offshore waters of Phi Phi Islands in Krabi, Thailand, on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Social media users in the country have called for an investigation into the video. The video was uploaded to Hod Jung Changwat Phuket's Facebook page, cited from the Bangkok Post.
In the video, a group of male and female tourists is seen playing in the sea, believed to be in the offshore waters of Phi Phi Islands, which is part of the national park. Most of them are holding lit cigarettes and open beer cans.
Netizens questioned why their guide did not intervene. Most netizens blamed the travel facilitators and called for them to be punished for negligence. If the allegations are true, boat operators will receive an initial warning and face a fine of 5,000 baht for bringing alcoholic beverages into the national park zone.
About Phi Phi Island
1. Snorkeling
Thailand has reopened snorkeling and scuba diving activities in the Phi Phi Islands. These activities have been suspended since last year to allow the reef to recover from severe bleaching. This tourist activity has been reopened at 10 designated locations within the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi. Saengsuri Songthong stated that the decision was made after signs of coral reef recovery were observed.
2. Andaman Sea
Quoted from Tourism Thailand, Koh Phi Phi or Phi Phi Island is located in the middle of the Andaman Sea, 42 kilometers from Amphoe Mueang. Phi Phi Island is part of Nopharat Thara Beach, Phi Phi Islands National Park, which includes two large islands, Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Le. There are also four small nearby islands, like Koh Yung, Koh Mai Phai, Koh Pida Nok, and Koh Pida Nai.
3. Maya Bay
Maya Bay in Phi Phi Islands offers extraordinary natural beauty with towering green limestone cliffs surrounding the beach. The sea water in this bay is clear, revealing diverse marine life, including coral reefs home to various colorful fish species. This area is also a destination for snorkeling enthusiasts. Some fish species commonly seen here include wrasse, damselfish, butterflyfish, and anemonefish that inhabit the coral reefs in the shallow waters.
