TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Discord is set to introduce an age verification system starting in March, officials announced on Monday.
In line with measures adopted by other online platforms, the change will see accounts for its roughly 200 million users default to teen-appropriate settings unless users complete the age verification process.
As part of its push to bolster child safety, Discord will restrict unverified accounts from accessing age-restricted servers and channels.
Users set to teen-appropriate settings will also face limitations in livestream-style spaces, where they will only be able to view filtered content rather than actively participate.
Officials added that Discord is working toward an ecosystem where accounts without age verification will receive alerts regarding unfamiliar friend requests. Direct messages from unknown users will also be filtered into a separate inbox for teen users, reducing exposure to unsolicited interactions.
Users who joined age-restricted servers before the rollout of Discord’s age verification system will temporarily lose access to those spaces, including the ability to view content or send messages, until they verify they are adults. Starting next month, joining any new age-restricted servers will also require completed age verification.
According to Discord’s global head of product policy, Savannah Badalich, “for most adults, age verification won’t be required, as Discord’s age inference model uses account information such as account tenure, device and activity data, and aggregated high-level patterns across Discord communities.”
The Verge also reported that Discord introduced similar age-verification measures in the UK and Australia last year, where some users managed to bypass the checks using Death Stranding’s photo mode. In response, Badalich said the company will “try to bug bash as much as we possibly can” as the broader rollout approaches.
Under its global age verification system, Discord said users will be able to choose between facial age estimation or submitting an official form of identification through third-party vendor partners, with additional verification options expected in the future.
In the initial rollout, users can opt for AI-based analysis using a video selfie or verify their age by uploading a photo of a government-issued ID. To address privacy concerns, Discord noted that both video and document data are either deleted shortly after verification or processed entirely on the user’s device.
That said, if Discord’s age-inference model is unable to confidently determine a user’s age, submitting a government ID may still be required to complete the verification process.
