TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The pollution of the Cisadane River has sparked widespread concern among local residents. The contamination is suspected to have originated from a pesticide warehouse that caught fire in South Tangerang City on Monday, February 9, 2026.
Several chemicals from the warehouse are believed to have contaminated the Cisadane River. The water briefly turned white and emitted a pungent odor. Many fish in the river also died.
"Yes, yesterday the smell was so strong that there was foam in the water flow," said Tamam, a local resident, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
He mentioned that locals were initially disturbed by the odor, which resembled fuel. However, officers from the South Tangerang City Environmental Agency confirmed that the liquid was not a highly flammable fuel.
"Yesterday, there was a lot of commotion, and after the inspection, it was confirmed that it was not fuel but chemical substances. It's just that the residents were scared because chemicals are also dangerous," he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the South Tangerang City Environmental Agency, Bani Khosiyatullah, confirmed the residents' reports. He stated that officers had been deployed to the location to conduct an investigation.
"Our officers have been sent to the location for an investigation," said Bani.
He added that the findings from the field inspection would serve as the basis for determining the next steps to be taken by the local government.
The Inspector of the South Tangerang City Environmental Agency, Firda Yofiyana, stated that the agency had collected water samples from several points for laboratory testing.
"We collected samples from four points, namely the location of the fire, the affected water flow, drainage channels, and The Green area," explained Yofiyana.
The test results are expected to be available in approximately 14 working days. The South Tangerang City Environmental Agency advised the public not to consume fish from the contaminated river.
"We urge the public not to utilize or consume fish from that river," said Yofiyana.
