TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Indonesia has reported an increase in unemployment figures in Indonesia as of February 2025.

According to BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, the number of unemployed individuals reached 7.28 million.

The labor force in February 2025 totaled 153.05 million people, an increase of 3.67 million compared to February 2024.

"Not all of these individuals were absorbed into the labor market, resulting in 7.28 million people being unemployed," Amalia explained during a press conference at the BPS headquarters in Central Jakarta on Monday, May 5, 2025.

This figure represents an increase of approximately 1.11 percent, or 80,000 people, compared to February 2024. As of February 2025, there were about 83,000 more unemployed individuals than in the same period last year.

"Compared to February 2024, the number of unemployed has risen by around 80,000 to 83,000 people, which is an increase of roughly 1.11 percent," said Amalia.

Although the number of unemployed individuals increased, the open unemployment rate in February 2025 fell to 4.76 percent, slightly below the 4.82 percent recorded in February 2024, with 7.28 million people classified as unemployed.

Amalia noted a decrease in the female unemployment rate by 0.19 percentage points, from 4.6 percent in February 2024 to 4.41 percent in February 2025.

In contrast, the male unemployment rate increased by 0.02 percentage points, from 4.96 percent in February 2024 to 4.98 percent in February 2025.

By region, the TPT in urban areas was 5.73 percent in February 2025, down from 5.89 percent the previous year. In rural areas, the rate also fell from 3.37 percent to 3.33 percent.

"This decline in the open unemployment rate occurred consistently across both urban and rural areas," Amalia stated.
