TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a strong earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on Tuesday, April 22, at 5:14 p.m., hitting parts of West Java, including Sukabumi and Garut.

According to the earthquake and tsunami director of BMKG, Daryono, the quake originated offshore, in the Indian Ocean south of West Java.

The earthquake's epicenter was at 8.60 degrees South Latitude and 106.57 degrees East Longitude, 143 kilometers south of Ratu Port, Sukabumi Regency, with a 36-kilometer depth.

"The earthquake was triggered by the seabed’s fault activities,” said Daryono in a written statement on Tuesday, April 22. Based on BMKG's analysis, the earthquake's source mechanism was a strike-slip movement.

According to BMKG, residents of Tegalbuleud felt the tremors at III-IV MMI scale,  meaning the earthquake was strong enough to make windows and doors creak or pottery to break.

In Nagrak and Garut, the earthquake's intensity scale was III MMI, with tremors felt inside houses, akin to a truck passing by. Meanwhile, in Sukabumi, Cianjur, Cidolog, and Cidadap, the earthquake was felt with an intensity scale of II-III MMI.

In the Cihanjuang, Citeko, Cisarua, Ratu Port, and Bandung City areas, the tremor was felt with a scale of II MMI, meaning the quake was felt by some people, causing light objects hanging to sway.

Based on BMKG's modeling results, according to Daryono, the offshore earthquake did not trigger a tsunami threat, and no aftershocks were recorded as of 5:50 p.m. local time.

BMKG urges residents to remain calm and not heed unconfirmed news. They advise people to avoid buildings that have cracked or damaged after the earthquake.
