TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Days of heavy rain falling early in the morning have returned to Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area in Indonesia. This is what happened today, Monday, February 9, 2026. Rain has been pounding most of this agglomeration area since before 4 a.m.
According to weather early warning data from the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), moderate to heavy rain began early this morning in several coastal areas, namely Tanjung Priok, Koja, Cilincing, and Pademangan in North Jakarta; Tarumajaya, Babelan, Sukawangi, Tambelang, North Tambun, Sukakarya, Cabangbungi, and Muaragembong in Bekasi Regency; Kresek, Kronjo, Mauk, Kamiri, Sukadiri, Rajeg, Pakuhaji, Sukamulya, Gunung Kaler, and Mekar Baru in Tangerang Regency.
Other areas where heavy rain had already begun were Neglasari and its surroundings in Tangerang City; Cakung and Duren Sawit in East Jakarta; West Bekasi, North Bekasi, and Medan Satria in Bekasi City. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the same potential rainfall may persist and even spread to other areas in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) until at least 7 a.m. During this period, only a small portion of the southern region received no early warning.
Jabodetabek residents have been experiencing rain in the early mornings again for the past three days after a brief lull. This increased rainfall, which does not undergo convective heating (scorching heat before rain), has been affecting Greater Jakarta since mid-January to late January. The cause is the Cross-Equatorial Northerly Surge (CENS) phenomenon, a cold surge from Siberia that reaches the equator.
This CENS phenomenon intensifies convergence over the Java Sea due to its meeting with air masses from the south (southerly surge). As a result, stratiform rain forms over the sea and spreads inland. Analysis by a research team at the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) previously stated that the CENS will strengthen again between mid-February and the end of the month.
"If it rains heavily in the morning, not just drizzle, that means the rain is coming from the sea, not land. Rain on land only occurs after 12 noon," said climatology professor Erma Yulihastin from the research center.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning for rain from February 8-10, urging Jakarta, Banten, and West Java to remain alert for the potential for heavy—very heavy—rain. Other regions receiving the same warning include West Sumatra, Jambi, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara.
