TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chair of the Indonesian Association of Cyber Media (AMSI), Wahyu Dhyatmika, stated that artificial intelligence (AI) companies take content from mass media without compensation. Based on research conducted by AMSI in collaboration with Monash University, approximately 20 percent of mass media sites are visited by AI Crawlers.
"Using AI Crawlers, AI companies take journalistic content without compensation," he said at the National Mass Media Convention 2026 ahead of the National Press Day in Banten, on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
Wahyu mentioned that cyber media companies have experienced a decrease in reader traffic over the past year. Based on observations of 500 AMSI members, traffic to news sites has declined by 30 to 50 percent.
AMSI collaborated with Monash University to examine the relationship between AI technology and this data. As a result, the decrease is due to the widespread use of AI. "The widespread use of AI has impacted the media. Advertisements have also decreased. This is experienced daily by publishers," he said.
According to the research, Wahyu assessed that the state of the media industry is unfavorable. He urged publishers to work together to create a policy document addressing AI.
Wahyu also suggested that publishers treat journalistic content and data as assets. Publishers can use the robots.txt application to prevent AI from taking their content. AI companies that want to take content must obtain permission first. "There must be an agreement. If not, permission should not be granted," he said.
Simultaneously, publishers must establish a digital infrastructure that enables fair negotiations with AI.
The Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, stated that the government is preparing a presidential regulation (Perpres) to regulate the use of AI. One of the regulations is that every work created with AI must use an AI marker or label. "Labeling AI for works that indeed use AI," she said at the same location.
She mentioned that the draft Perpres on AI was completed in October 2025. The draft has been submitted to the Ministry of Law. "It is hoped to be signed soon," she said.
Furthermore, this presidential regulation will be used by ministries and institutions to issue ministerial regulations related to AI.
Meutya emphasized the importance of strengthening non-AI work. In the world of journalism, she recommended that editorial offices not rely entirely on AI. There needs to be a stance in the editorial room regarding the extent to which AI usage is allowed.
The National Mass Media Convention, with the theme "Press, AI, and Digital Transformation: Building an Information Ecosystem for Public Interest," is part of the series of activities commemorating the National Press Day in 2026. The event was attended by the Chair of the Press Council, Komaruddin Hidayat, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria, Director of Ideology, Nationalism, Politics, and Democracy, Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Nuzula Anggraini, Chair of the Digital and Sustainability Commission, Press Council Dahlan Dahi, and Chair of the Digital Platform Company Responsibility Committee Suprapto Sastro Atmojo.
