TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mansoureh Khojasteh, the wife of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, died after an Israeli-US attack on her residence, Mehr news agency reported on Monday, as reported by NDTV.
Earlier on Saturday, the United States (US) and Israel launched a series of attacks on Iranian targets, including Tehran, causing damage and numerous civilian casualties.
Iran retaliated by launching missile attacks on Israeli territory and US military infrastructure in the Middle East.
On Sunday, Iranian state TV confirmed the deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his daughter, his 14-month-old grandson, his son-in-law, and another daughter-in-law. The attack also killed several other senior officials. Ali Shamkhani, Khamenei's top adviser, and the head of the powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Mohammad Pakpour, were also among those killed.
Iran accused the US and Israel of carrying out an act of terrorism and a premeditated assassination of Ali Khamenei.
The wife of the Supreme Leader, who was severely injured, is in a coma. He died at the age of 79, Mehr reported. The couple had been married since 1964, and Khojasteh had largely lived out of the public eye. Although little is known about him, the couple had six children.
In an official statement on Sunday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry asserted that the joint attack violated the principles and norms of international law, including the UN Charter.
"The terrorist act by the US and the Zionist regime (Israel), which carried out the premeditated assassination of the Supreme Leader and other high-ranking officials through military aggression against the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the country (Iran), constitutes an unprecedented attack on all international principles and norms," the statement said.
According to the Iranian government, the use of military force against the head of a sovereign state cannot be justified under the international legal system.
The death of Khamenei, 86, sparked outrage among the regime and the Iranian public. He became the first supreme leader of Iran to be killed in an attack during Ramadan, along with his son, son-in-law, and 14-month-old grandson.
