TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ahlulbait (ABI), an independent Indonesian Islamic mass organization, stated that the country's government must be prepared to withdraw from its membership in the Board of Peace. According to this Islamic community organization, the Indonesian government should not be a member of the United States-sponsored institution if it does not adhere to the principles of justice.
ABI Central Executive Board Chairperson Zahir Yahya said the Indonesian government must be prepared to withdraw from the Board of Peace. "If, after an open evaluation, the forum does not meet the principles of justice, equality, and independence," Zahir said in a written statement on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
ABI is urging the administration of President Prabowo Subianto to evaluate its membership in the Board of Peace. The country, Zahir said, must recalculate the political, legal, and diplomatic consequences inherent in such membership.
Zahir stated that a review of the Board of Peace's membership must ensure Indonesia can engage substantively. Every country, Zahir said, must be treated equally, and the forum must not become a space for one party to dominate.
Furthermore, Indonesia is also obliged to ensure the protection of civilians and the sovereignty of Palestine. Indonesia, Zahir said, must continue to concretely support Palestinian independence, reject the normalization of colonialism, and strengthen global diplomatic leadership that sides with victims, humanity, and justice.
Zahir said the struggle for Palestinian independence is part of Indonesia's constitutional mandate and universal humanitarian commitment. "Therefore, every involvement of Indonesia in international forums must ensure that it does not deviate from the principles of justice, does not undermine sovereignty, and does not allow colonialism to be justified in new forms," he said.
Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the government could withdraw from the Board of Peace. Indonesia will leave the US-founded institution if its goals, such as Palestinian independence, are not achieved.
According to Sugiono, the government is open to the option of withdrawing from the organization if it does not align with its vision and mission for peace. "Yes, if it does not align with what we want," Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Sugiono said the Indonesian government has several benchmarks for building peace in Gaza, Palestine, after the Israeli aggression. First, he said, is the current peaceful situation in Gaza and the peaceful situation in Palestine in general.
The ultimate goal, he said, is Palestinian independence. "Ultimately, it will be Palestinian independence and sovereignty," said the Gerindra Party politician.
