TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As Indonesia enters the second week of Ramadan 2026, demand for mudik travel (the annual homecoming exodus ahead of Eid al-Fitr) is rising sharply, with train tickets selling quickly in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas.
State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), through its Yogyakarta regional office (Daop 6), reported that as of Thursday, February 26 at 12:00 PM Western Indonesia Time, 231,357 long-distance train tickets had been sold for departures from the region.
The figure represents about 44 percent of the total 525,350 seats prepared by KAI Daop 6 for the 22-day Eid travel period, which runs from March 11 to April 1, 2026.
“The surge in Eid travel ticket purchases has been high since the first week of Ramadan, and we expect demand to increase further in the second week,” said Feni Novida Saragih, Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta.
Additional Trains and Peak Travel Dates
To accommodate the spike in passengers, KAI is operating 12 additional trains from the Daop 6 area, consisting of 10 extra long-distance services and two Motis (Motorcycle Transport Train) services, which allow travelers to ship their motorcycles to their hometowns.
Bookings remain open, and the company is monitoring sales daily. The highest ticket demand is currently recorded for three days after Eid (H+3), which falls on Tuesday, March 24. On that date alone, 21,217 tickets were sold.
Occupancy rates show a gradual rise leading up to the holiday peak. On March 11, the first day of the Eid transport period, 2,509 seats were sold (13 percent occupancy). Sales increased steadily in the following days, reaching 9,512 tickets (45 percent) on March 18.
A sharp jump began on March 22, when 13,216 tickets were sold (66 percent occupancy). Trains reached full capacity on March 23 with 19,954 tickets sold (100 percent), and on March 24 sales exceeded initial seat capacity, reaching 101 percent.
After the peak return period, bookings gradually decline. By March 30, occupancy had dropped to 46 percent, and by April 1, the final day of the travel window, only 2,048 tickets had been sold, equivalent to 10 percent occupancy.
Passengers Urged to Book Early
With seats on popular return dates filling up quickly, Feni urged prospective passengers not to delay purchasing tickets to avoid missing out.
For travelers who cannot secure tickets on their preferred dates, KAI recommends using the connecting-train feature available on the Access by KAI mobile application or choosing alternative travel schedules to improve their chances of finding available seats.
The annual mudik season is one of the largest mass movements of people in Indonesia, as millions return to their hometowns to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with family.
